Whether you're worried your child might have special needs, have just received a diagnosis, or are navigating the system for the first time — you're in the right place. This is complicated territory and it can feel overwhelming. Take it one step at a time.
If your child is losing skills suddenly, unsafe, self-harming, unable to eat or sleep, being harmed, or you feel close to crisis, seek same-day advice through your GP, NHS 111, 999 in an emergency, school safeguarding lead, social care, or your local mental health crisis route.
If you have concerns about your child's development, your GP or health visitor is usually the first port of call. They can refer to a paediatrician or specialist.
Mainstream schools and maintained nursery schools have a SENCO (Special Educational Needs Coordinator) who is responsible for SEND support. Ask to meet them. You can also ask the school to put SEN Support in place without a diagnosis.
Start a file or folder — keep copies of all letters, emails, reports and assessments. Note dates of conversations, what was said, and what was agreed.
The SEND Code of Practice gives children and young people with SEND legal rights to support. You have the right to be involved in decisions about your child's education.
Every local authority has a free, impartial Information, Advice and Support Service for SEND families. They can explain your rights and help you navigate the system.
